LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL: Canton Minors Avenge Earlier Loss to Wellsboro, Move On In Loser's Bracket (2012-07-02)

Last Friday, the Canton minors All-Star team suffered their first loss of the post-season, dropping a close game to Wellsboro, 6-5. The young team of 9 and 10 year olds took the loss in stride, apparently, as they've ran off two straight wins to move themselves into the semi-finals of the loser's bracket. Being that their latest victory came over Wellsboro has to add a little sweetness to the win.

Canton struck early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. They held that lead until Wellsboro scored one in the third and two more in the fourth. Canton wasn't down for long, scoring three runs in the fifth inning, and took a 5-3 lead into the top of the sixth.

Canton seemingly put the game away by scoring four runs in the inning, taking a 9-3 lead into the last half-inning. Wellsboro staged a furious, two-out comeback attempt, scoring five runs after Canton induced two groundouts to start the inning. The Canton boys shut the door on the rally, avenging the earlier defeat with a hard-fought, 9-8 victory.

The Canton bats stayed hot, as the boys pounded out eleven hits. Timmy Ward connected on another home run, his second in as many games, sparking the three-run fifth inning. Ward added two singles in the game and scored three times.

Gavin Tymeson had three singles, and scored all three times he reached base. Joel Schoonover collected two singles and a run scored, while Garrett Storch had another extra-base hit for Canton, hitting a double.

Tyler Williams had a single and a run scored, and Cameron Bellows added a single, while Aaron Sparling scored a run.

Tymeson struck out eight Wellsboro batters for Canton, earning the win.

Canton will now travel to Athens on Tuesday for a 6pm game. Athens, the #1 seed out of the Mid-East Division, were sent to the loser's bracket by East #2 seed Tunkhannock. They knocked RTL and NEBALL from the tournament, setting up today's showdown with Canton.
